Week 6

Catch Up Day

Today is a catch up day and there are no new assignments, but everyone will be pretty busy the entire hour. Your first priority today is to finish any assignments from this rotation that you haven’t turned in yet. Assignments from this rotation include:

  1. Missouri Scavenger Hunt
  2. Missouri History and Timeline
  3. Missouri Map
  4. Missouri Cities PowerPoint
  5. Missouri Review Assignment

If Everything’s Finished

If you have all of those turned in, you need to continue working to prepare for the States and Capitals test that is coming October 12 which is in 2 weeks. If you didn’t complete the Study Guide off of the desk in the front of the room then you need to grab one of those and work on it. It is not for a grade, but if you finish it, it will give you something to study off of whenever you are at home.

After you finish the Study Guide, you can study for the test by going to the different websites from the US Capitals and Postal Abbreviations section in my class Links to help you study.

Week 6

Missouri Review

Today you have a Missouri Review assignment in Quia. There are a few items that are new information, but for the most part it is a review. This is not a quiz. You are allowed to use previous assignments or the internet to help you find your answers. Either you or your partner need to log onto Quia. The link for your assignment is here.

Your username is your first name, your last name, 3589     There are no commas and no spaces. For example, my username would be:  jacobosborne3589

Yours should look exactly like that except you will insert your first and last name instead of mine.

You must use your official school name. For example, if your name is William, but you go by Will, you must use your proper name William.

If you have 2 last names make sure you use both last names on your log-in. For example: If your name is Jose Reyes-Lopez, you would need to put josereyeslopez.

Your password is your Mosis #.

The “secret word” for this assignment is:  Missouri

Click “Submit” whenever you are done.

When Finished

Check Infinite Campus to make sure you have a grade for all assignments for this class. Then if you have everything finished you may:

  1. Grab a States and Capitals Study Guide off of the front desk and complete it.
  2. After you finish the study guide, go to my class Links and use a website from the US Capitals and Postal Abbreviations section to help you study.

Week 6

Missouri Cities PowerPoint

If you didn’t finish or present your PowerPoint from yesterday, get that finished first so you can present it today.

Missouri Map

We have a new assignment in class today. It should be pretty short. You need to go to Google Classroom. After you go there, read and follow the instructions to the assignment.

Hint: Boot Heel and Ozark Plateau are 2 of the landforms that you will need to identify on your map.

When Finished

Several students are still missing the Missouri Timeline Assignment. Check Infinite Campus to make sure that you have a grade for this assignment. If you don’t, you need to finish it.

If you have everything turned in, study for the states, capitals, and postal abbreviations test that will be in 2 weeks! I’ve given you some websites you can use to help you study.

Week 6

PowerPoints

You will have about 10-15 minutes to make sure everything is in order with your presentation. Make sure it’s saved in the correct location: I Drive>Osborne>Your Hour>MO Cities

It should be saved as:  hr-last name-last name-name of city

We will be presenting these in class today.

Week 6

Continue Working

Some of you will start finishing today. After you finish your PowerPoint, save it to your H Drive.

After you save your PowerPoint to your H Drive, go into your H Drive in your folders and right click on your PowerPoint. Click “Copy”.

Then click on:  This PC>Students (I) Drive>Osborne>your hour>MO cities folder>Then right click and select “Paste”

Name it:

hr-last name-last name-name of city

Week 5

Partnering

An overwhelming majority of you are doing a great job and you’re working great with your partner and doing great in this class, but this is the time of the year when partnering issues start popping up a little more frequently. Typically what happens is some of you start to get too comfortable, some of you don’t like your partner this rotation, some of you like talking to your partner a little bit too much and you’re not getting enough work done, and some of you are just starting to get a little lazy. The first thing I want you to do is open up our Partnering Norms that we went over at the beginning of the semester. Read back through and re-familiarize yourself with them making sure that you are doing the best job you can in meeting those expectations. Partnering Class Norms

MO Cities PowerPoint Project

Today your are going to start a short 3 day project. Whenever you finish, you will be presenting these.

Remember that since you are using PowerPoint, you will need to save this to your H Drive (Your MOSIS Number).

This is the first time you have used PowerPoint in this class. I want to see how you use it right now. Next time we use PowerPoint I will show you the “Do’s and Don’ts of PowerPoint” and give you some tips. If you’ve never used PowerPoint before you can watch a tutorial video that shows you the basics of how to use it. Go to Google Drive>Team Drives>Videos>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>PowerPoint Basics

To figure out which city you have assigned, each computer has been a Computer Station Number. To find out which Computer Station Number you have use this:

The directions for assignment can be found here: Missouri Cities Project

Instead of copying and pasting pictures, I want you to save them and insert them. This is a good habit to get into. It makes the file size smaller and it makes it easy for you to find the pictures again just in case you can’t find your saved PowerPoint. If you don’t know how to save and insert pictures in PowerPoint, all you have to do is:

  1. Find your picture
  2. Right click on it and select “save picture as”
  3. Save it to your Geography folder in your H drive
  4. Go to PowerPoint and click “insert” at the top of the page
  5. Select “picture” and find it saved in your H drive

Tip if you have Independence/Lamar: It is the starting point to the 3 most famous trails from westward expansion. (That might be worth Googling)

When you save, save it as:

hr-last name-last name-Name of your assigned city

For example, if I worked with Mr. Crigger during first hour on this assignment and we were assigned Carthage our save would look like this:

1-Osborne-Crigger-Carthage

Week 5

Finish Assignments

There still are a ton of groups that are working on either the timeline or they haven’t even finished the Missouri Scavenger Hunt. I will give you another day to finish both of those assignments. If you have both assignments finished, you don’t have free time today. I have something specific I want you to do.

After you are finished

After you have those 2 assignments finished, I want you to read this document.  Spook Light Feedback      It talks a little more about the Joplin Spooklight and it talks about a major consequence of mining in Southwest Missouri.

We will have a test over states and capitals in about 3-4 weeks. You need to go ahead and start studying those!

Here’s a few websites you can use to start practicing those:

Link 1: There’s a large variety of resources at this website. You can start off on the “Beginner” levels and try to work your way up to “Advanced”. They have games that allow you to practice identifying states on a map and they have games that have you match states with capitals.

Link 2: You will want to be a little familiar with a US Map before you visit this link. You have to place the correct state name on the correct state. It has a timer so you can do this multiple times to see if you can beat your previous high score. You may also look around on this website because it has other state, capital, and postal abbreviation games.

Link 3: This website shows you a state on a map and you have to select what the capital is.

The order of finishing should be:

  1. Missouri Scavenger Hunt
  2. Missouri Timeline
  3. Read the Spooklight Feedback
  4. Study States, Capitals, and Postal Abbreviations

Week 5

Finish MO Scavenger Hunt

If you didn’t finish the Missouri Scavenger Hunt Assignment yesterday, you need to continue working on that and finish it.

MO Timeline Assignment

Once you have that assignment finished, you need to work with your partner to look at some key events in Missouri’s history. You will need to use the internet to find out what dates different events occurred. Complete the questions and the timeline in this assignment: MO History and Timeline

Make sure that you include both the Date and the Event in each text box.

To turn it in you will have to do an extra step this time.

  1. Go to Google Classroom
  2. Go into this class
  3. Click on MO Timeline
  4. Click the “add” button
  5. Click on “Files”
  6. Click the “Select Files from you Computer” button
  7. Find the MO Timeline document that you just finished and saved to your H Drive and click on it.
  8. Click on the “Turn in” button.

Week 5

Constitution Day

Today is Constitution Day! Every Social Studies teacher is required by law to teach about the Constitution because of its importance to all US citizens. This is the document that gives everyone their rights and freedoms that many people around the world do not have.

To practice getting more familiar with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, you need to play one of the simulations below.

Do not “log-in” or “register”. Just click “No Thanks”. Read all of the pop-ups and prompts. They will give you the directions of how to play the game.

Do I Have the Right? This website allows you to take the role of a lawyer. You have to use your knowledge of the Constitution to help decide whether your clients have winnable cases.

Do I Have the Right? -Bill of Rights edition  This is the same game as above, but instead of using knowledge about the Constitution, you will use knowledge about the Bill of Rights.

When you finish your game it will give you a total score. Raise your hand and I will look on my screen to check your score when you finish so I can figure out who finishes the class with the highest score. Everyone gets 5 points for participating today, but if you get the high score in your class you will also get 5 extra credit points. If you get the high score for the day, you will get 10 extra credit points.
