Week 7

Today I’m going to go over a PowerPoint presentation with you. I want to make sure that you understand all of the concepts related to population. You need to sit quietly and we will begin shortly.

With any extra time, you must work on studying for the states and capitals test.

Link 1: There’s a large variety of resources at this website. You can start off on the “Beginner” levels and try to work your way up to “Advanced”. They have games that allow you to practice identifying states on a map and they have games that have you match states with capitals.

Link 2: You will want to be a little familiar with a US Map before you visit this link. You have to place the correct state name on the correct state. It has a timer so you can do this multiple times to see if you can beat your previous high score. You may also look around on this website because it has other state, capital, and postal abbreviation games.

Link 3: This website shows you a state on a map and you have to select what the capital is.

Week 7

If you didn’t finish your review from yesterday, I want you to finish that first.

We are going to spend a few days this week talking about population. That might sound like a boring topic, but it actually is pretty interesting. Today we need to build a little background knowledge though. You are going to find definitions and pictures for some of the words we will be discussing over the next couple of days.

You need to download this document: Population Vocab  You need to use the online textbook or grab a World Cultures and Geography textbook off of the shelf to find the definitions. The definitions must come out of the textbook unless they tell you otherwise.

Your online textbook can be found in this link: To log-in go to this website.

Your username is:    geographytextbook1

Your password is:   tigers123

If it gives you a message saying that you logged in successfully, but it doesn’t know where to take you, try going to this website. Once it loads, select sign-in.

The definitions can be found in the glossary or by using pages 74-81. You will type the definition for each of the words in the PowerPoint. On each slide, you need to find a picture that represents the vocabulary word. I did the first one for you as an example. I typed the definition for “population” and then I found a picture online that represented it. The world population is now over 7 billion people. You need to do the same thing on the remaining slides. On some of the slides, I’ve already inserted pictures for you, but you still need to find the definitions. On most slides you will need to type the definition and find a picture on the internet that is an example of the word. When you finish, every slide will have a definition and a picture on it.

Whenever you finish, save it:

hr-last name-last name-population

Turn it in.

Week 7

Today you have a Missouri Review assignment on Quia. Most of the material is a review. There are only a few items that are new information. This is not a quiz. You are allowed to use previous assignments or the internet to help you find your answers. Either you or your partner need to log onto Quia. The link for your assignment is here.

Your username is:     your first name, your last name, 32     There are no commas and no spaces. For example, my username would be:  jacobosborne32

Yours should look exactly like that except you will insert your first and last name instead of mine.

Your password is your Mosis #.

The “secret word” for this assignment is:  Missouri

Week 6

5th and 6th Hours:

I had to leave school early today. I expect you to be on your best behavior. If your name gets left by the substitute, you can expect a referral when I return on Monday.

The substitute will announce missing work, but be sure to check Infinite Campus. If your H Drive doesn’t show up when you log-in, restart your computer and it should show up after that.

Today is the last day that you will be with your current partner. Today is a catch up day. Check Infinite Campus to check your grade and if there are any assignments from my class that don’t have a grade. If you have any assignment that doesn’t have a grade listed, that means I don’t have it. The main assignment that I’m missing from groups is the MO Scavenger Hunt and Missouri Timeline.

After you have everything finished, I want you to read this document.  Spook Light Feedback      It talks a little more about the Joplin Spooklight and it talks about a major consequence of mining in Southwest Missouri.

When you are finished with all of your work, you are allowed to:

We will have a test over states and capitals in about 3-4 weeks. You might want to go ahead and start studying those!

Here’s a few websites you can use to start practicing those:

Link 1: There’s a large variety of resources at this website. You can start off on the “Beginner” levels and try to work your way up to “Advanced”. They have games that allow you to practice identifying states on a map and they have games that have you match states with capitals.

-Read a book

-Work on homework from another class

-Visit class links/Google Earth

Week 6

You need to work with your partner to look at some key events in Missouri’s history. You will need to use the internet to find out what dates different events occurred. Complete the questions and the timeline in this assignment: MO History and Timeline

Make sure that you include both the Date and the Event in each text box.

Whenever you are finished, save it (hr-last name-last name-MOtimeline) and turn it in.

If you finish early make sure you have all of your other work finished! I have a fair amount of assignments that are still missing from this rotation. CHECK INFINITE CAMPUS! The 2 other assignments that we have done this rotation are the Joplin Shootout and the Missouri Map Scavenger Hunt.

Week 6

You will have about 10 minutes to make sure everything is in order with your presentation. Make sure it’s saved in the correct location: I Drive>Osborne>Your Hour>MO Cities

It should be saved as:  hr-last name-last name-name of city

We will be presenting these in class today.

If we finish presentations early, you need to work with your partner to look at some key events in Missouri’s history.

Week 6

Some of you will start finishing today. After you finish your PowerPoint, save it to your H Drive.

After you save your PowerPoint to your H Drive, save it to  Students (I)>Osborne>your hour>MO cities folder

Do not turn it into me. You will be presenting this presentation to the class.

USE GOOGLE EARTH STREET VIEW AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you travel around frequently in street view, it will likely freeze up. If that happens, it’s you’re responsibility to take care of it. You will likely have to restart your computer. Press ctrl+Alt+delete to bring up your task manager to try to close Google Earth first.

Week 6

Today your are going to start a short 3 day project. Whenever you finish, you will be presenting these.

This is the first time you have used PowerPoint in this class. I want to see how you use it right now. Next time we use PowerPoint I will show you the “Do’s and Don’ts of PowerPoint” and give you some tips. If you’ve never used PowerPoint before you can watch a tutorial video that shows you the basics of how to use it. Go to the folder and open the Video (V) Drive>Osborne>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>PowerPoint Basics

The directions for assignment can be found here: Missouri Cities Project

When you save, save it as:

hr-last name-last name-Name of your assigned city

For example, if I worked with Mr. Kyte during first hour on this assignment and we were assigned Carthage our save would look like this:

1-osborne-kyte-carthage

Week 5

Today is Constitution Day! Every Social Studies teacher is required by law to teach about the Constitution because of its importance to all US citizens. This is the document that gives everyone their rights and freedoms that many people around the world do not have.

1. To start class, I am going to show you a Brain Pop video that discusses the Bill of Rights.

2. If you would like a free Constitution Week bookmark, you may get one off of the desk at the front of the room.

3. I want you to get more familiarized with the Bill of Rights. To get you better acquainted with them, I want you to visit and play the iCivics game “Do I Have a Right?”

Do not “log-in” or “register”. Just click “No Thanks”. Read all of the pop-ups and prompts. They will give you the directions of how to play the game.

Reminder! If you didn’t turn in any assignment from the past 2 weeks (with your last partner), those assignments are due tomorrow! If they aren’t turned in by tomorrow, the best grade you can earn is 1/2 credit. Make arrangements to come in before or after school or you can work on them at home and email them to me.
