Week 8

Finish Assignments

Most students are still working on the Southeast Asia Scavenger Hunt or the Asia Excel Assignment. Today you need to try to get those finished up.

Tomorrow I have a couple of presentations to go over with you and then on Friday you will start a new project.

Enrichment Videos

If you need something to do, I put some old videos that we no longer watch during lessons anymore in a folder called Enrichment Videos. Go to Video (V) Drive>Osborne>Enrichment Videos

Week 8

Southeast Asia Scavenger Hunt

If you didn’t get this finished yesterday, go ahead and get that finished first. After you finish it, turn it in and move onto the next assignment.

Southeast Asia Economy

In our next assignment we are going to look at the economy of Southeast Asia. You will use Excel to complete the assignment.

If you don’t remember how to use Excel, you can watch the tutorial video that I made. Go to the  (V) Drive. Inside the V Drive, I want you to click the following: Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Semester 2 Excel Basics.

I want you to create a document that has:

1. 5  Headings- Countries$GDP, Life Expectancy, Literacy Rate, and Classification.    I want you to use size 20 font for the headings and make them bold.

2. In the countries column there are 15 countries I want you to include. They are: India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan.

3. In the $GDP column, you need to use this link to find the GDP per capita in each of the countries.  Type the GDP for each country in the column. Make sure you use dollar signs. If you want to you can do what I did in the video and highlight the column and change the numbers to currency instead of typing the $ sign. I want whole numbers. I don’t want your decimal point to show cents. Ex. $32,ooo       not   $32,000.oo

4. Use this link to find the life expectancy rates for each country. Round each number so there aren’t any decimal points. They should all be whole numbers.

5. Use this link to find the literacy rates for each country.Use the literacy rates for the total population.  Round each number so there aren’t any decimal points. They should all be whole numbers as a percent. Japan and South Korea aren’t listed on this website. Japan =99%  and South Korea =98%.

**To make it easy on yourselves, highlight the cells and format them as a percentage and 0 decimal places BEFORE you type the numbers in the cells for Literacy Rate. If you type the numbers first, you will have to manually go in and delete extra zeros from your cells**

6. For the Classification column, I want you to look at the data to determine whether you believe they are a developed, developing, or a middle income country. Write which one you believe each country is.

You can use this chart as a guide to help you determine the classification.

DEVELOPED (rich)

MIDDLE-INCOME

DEVELOPING (poor)

LIFE EXPECTANCY

M – 70 and above

F – 80 and above

M – 60’s & 70’s

F – 70’s

M – below 60

F – below 70

INFANT MORTALITY

Below 10

11 – 25

Above 25

LITERACY RATE

97% or above

80% – 96%

Below 80%

PER CAPITA GDP

Above $20,000

$8,000 – $19,999

Below $8,000

7. After each column is finished, make a 2-D Column Chart for GDP. You will do it the exact same way that I did in the video.

8. Make a 2-D Bar Graph for Life Expectancy. You will do it the exact same way that I did in the video.

After you finish save it.  hr-last name-last name-AsiaExcel

Week 8

Missing Assignments

If you have any assignments from last rotation to finish, you have until this Friday to turn them in without penalty. Most every assignment is turned in, but there still are a few (mainly projects) that need to be finished and submitted.

Southeast Asia

We are going to spend the next several weeks learning about Southeast Asia. Today you are going to work on this Southeast Asia Scavenger Hunt to help you get introduced to this part of the world. You can get the document from here: Southeast Asia Scavenger Hunt

Whenever you finish, save it and turn it in.

Week 7

Africa Test

Today you are going to take your test over Africa.

You can access the test here.

Your username is your first name, your last name, 309     There are no commas and no spaces. For example, my username would be:  jacobosborne309

Yours should look exactly like that except you will insert your first and last name instead of mine.

You must use your official school name. For example, if your name is William, but you go by Will, you must use your proper name William.

If you have 2 last names make sure you use both last names on your log-in. For example: If your name is Jose Reyes-Lopez, you would need to put josereyeslopez309.

Your password is your Mosis #.

Whenever you finish your test press “Submit”. You don’t have to tell me or show me your score. I have access to all of the scores.

There is to be no talking for the rest of the hour. If you talk, you will receive a 0. I will give you the secret word in a couple of moments.

After the Test

If you haven’t finished your project, work on that quietly. Tomorrow is a catch up day, but most students need to finish the map from yesterday.

After you finish you are allowed to do what you are always allowed to do.

1. Read a book

2. Work on homework from another class

3. Visit Class Links or Since this is a test day, I will allow you to go to CoolMath whenever you are finished.

Week 7

Catch Up Day

Tomorrow we will meet in Lab 109 for our Africa Test. Everyone will take the test by themselves. You can grab a study guide off of the front table.

I will announce any missing assignments at the beginning of the hour. You will have the whole hour today to work on missing assignments and study for tomorrow’s test.

Week 7

Catch-Up Day/Test Day

The assembly schedule got moved around in our favor so we can now have our test on Friday instead of tomorrow. That means that tomorrow will be our Catch-Up Day.

African Misconceptions

Today we are going to talk about the African Misconceptions that many of you looked at/worked on last week.

If you didn’t already do this assignment, you need to download this document:  Misconceptions

We will be going over this for the first part of class today.

Study Guide

If you have your project finished and turned in, you are going to work on a study guide for Friday’s test. You need to pick up a study guide off of the desk at the front of the room. The one by the bookshelf. Everyone needs their own copy of the study guide. You can use the internet or previous assignments to answer the questions on the study guide.

Week 7

Africa Project

I’m hoping that most of you will finish your projects today, but I know there will be several groups who don’t finish. All of my classes have done a great job of staying on task and most have been working really hard.

Rest of the Week Schedule

Wed- Discuss African Misconceptions; Work on Study Guide

Thurs- Test of Africa

Fri- Catch Up Day; Last Day with partner

Week 7

Africa Project

I’ve been very pleased with how well you’ve been working so far. You’ve done a great job of staying on task. Today you will continue working on the project. Make sure you are finding good facts about your topics and interesting facts that are actually interesting. I will be grading pictures on effort. If I can tell you worked hard on it, you will get a good grade for it. If it looks like you just flew through it, you’ll be losing some points.

If you are able to finish the project, you need to save it and turn it in like normal.

Week 6

Africa Project

Continue working on the Africa project.

You must select the items you are researching from a list in the directions! You have to select one item from each of the four categories: Landform, Landmark, Person, and Animal. The lists are found on page 2 of the directions.

I know that you will want to create your pictures first, but I don’t want to see you spend so much time on your pictures that you run out of time to find the information that you need. So make sure that you get your research taken care of.

Also, the picture on your title slide can come from the internet. Make sure you link it to my website though. You will create all of the other pictures in paint.

Some of you will start creating your pictures in paint. You will be graded on effort with your pictures. If you quickly throw it together; that’s obvious. You will lose points. If I feel it looks like you put effort into the picture; you will earn your points.

Week 6

Africa Project

Today we are going to start a project that will probably last  4 class periods. You will have a little bit of freedom for selecting your topics for this assignment. You are going to use PowerPoint to create a “digital book”. You will also be using Paint for this assignment. You can access Paint by clicking on the Windows Icon in the bottom left hand corner>Click All Programs>Click Accessories>Click Paint

Download this document so you can read the directions:   Africa Project

Tutorial Videos

You will also need to watch 2 videos for this assignment.

To access the videos go to the Video (V) Drive>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Basics of Paint

The other video you need to watch is located at    Video (V) Drive>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Creating Hyperlinks in PowerPoint

Today’s Tasks

-Pick out all of your topics

-Do your research

Whenever you finish this project, save and turn it in.
