Week 6

Climographs

I only had a couple groups finish this assignment yesterday. You need to finish this first. Whenever you are finished, make sure you read the directions in yesterday’s post so you can turn it in.

Latin America

With the rest of the time we have left this semester we are going to focus on Latin America. We won’t get to spend as much time covering it as I would like, but you will still get a small peak at some of their culture and geography. If you have Spanish Class either this year or next year, this part of the world is covered in great detail.

After you finish and turn in the Climograph Assignment, you will work on the Latin American Scavenger Hunt. To access this document, go to Google Classroom.

When answering questions, remember that we always use American Units for measuring: miles, feet, etc.

Week 6

Climographs

Today you are going to learn about Climographs. Climographs are useful charts because they show you average temperature and precipitation for various places around the world. They are used by many different people. Meteorologists, farmers, and tourists are a few examples of different people who use climographs.

Tutorial Videos

I made a video that shows you how they work and how you can read them. To watch the video, go to Google Drive>Team Drive>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Climographs

Next watch this video: Go to Google Drive>Shared Drive>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Copying and Adding Shapes in Word

Climograph Assignment

For your assignment, we will be using Word. First, you need to download this document: Climograph Template   Answer the questions on the first Climograph. Make sure you use a different color font and that you answer using complete sentences. For the 2nd and 3rd Climograph (New York and Sacramento), you need to use the data from this document Climograph Data to create the chart for New York and Sacramento.

Whenever you finish, save it and turn it into Google Classroom.

To turn it in you will have to do an extra step this time.

  1. Go to Google Classroom
  2. Go into this class
  3. Click on the Climograph Assignment
  4. Click the “add” button
  5. Click on “Files”
  6. Click the “Select Files from you Computer” button
  7. Find the Climograph document that you just finished and saved to your H Drive and click on it.
  8. Click on the “Turn in” button.

Week 5

Presentations

Today we are going to play everyone’s commercials. If we have extra time after we finish, groups who haven’t finished theirs yet will need try to get theirs finished because we are moving on to new partners and new assignments on Monday.

Week 5

Final Work Day

The plan is for today to be the final full class period you get to work on the project. I have given you all of the resources you need to finish everything. Whenever you are finished make sure you:

  1. Double check the scoring guide: CREATE AN ISLAND – Scoring Guide
  2. Have it turned into the correct folder.

Turning in your Project

I have a tutorial video for you to watch. There is no sound on the video. Ultimately, you are going to click the “download” button at the top of the screen in Spark and then put your download in the Student I Drive. Watch the video and it will show you what to do:  Google Drive>Shared Drive>Videos>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Turning in Commercial

Make sure the name of your saved island is the name of your island. Mine would be saved as, “Sports Island”.

Week 5

Island Project

Everyone should be on Step #4 which is making the commercial in Adobe Spark. I will give you today and tomorrow then we will present on Wednesday. I believe most of you will have no problems getting finished in time. Some of you will have to speed up a bit to get finished on time.

Make sure you check the scoring guide to double check that you aren’t missing anything: CREATE AN ISLAND – Scoring Guide

Week 5

Island Project

You should be working on step #4 by now which is Adobe Spark.

Error Messages

If you get an error message or microphone error it is likely pretty easily fixable.

Microphone issue- make sure the microphone is plugged in and press the refresh button; that should fix it

GL Error- if the website keeps crashing while you try to preview it, open the Edge browser. That is the “e” at the bottom of the screen. It’s like Chrome, but it is Microsoft’s version of a web browser. Once you are in edge, go to Adobe Spark and log in.

Week 5

Island Project

Continue working on the project. You should be finished with the first 3 steps after today. If you aren’t finished with the first 3 steps, you are behind where you should be by now.

I have posted directions for every step of the project. The only thing that I haven’t posted how to do yet is turn it in which I posted those directions in the next paragraph.

Week 4

Island Project

Continue working on your island project. I have already given you access to all of the directions that you need for the project except for how to use the camera which I posted below.

Taking Picture With Camera

If you are working on step #4 (Adobe Spark), you will need to borrow a digital camera from me to insert a picture of your island that you created (Step #3). If you are ready to get your drawn picture into your project you will need to take a picture of it with a camera. I have 2 cameras for you to borrow. After you borrow a camera, follow these instructions for taking pictures and saving them to your H Drive

  1. Turn it on
  2. Press the button on top right-hand side of the camera to take the picture.
  3. Press the power button to turn off the camera.
  4. Plug the cord into the camera and to your computer
  5. On one of the cameras you will need to select “PC” on the camera (If no options show up on the camera, you can skip this step)
  6. Open the Folders Icon from the bottom of your computer
  7. Click USB Drive E on the left-hand side of the Folders box
  8. Click DCIM
  9. Click on the name of your camera. It should look something similar to: 100OLYMP.
  10. Click on your picture file. The one at the very bottom should be the last picture that was taken.
  11. Whenever your picture is open on the screen, click on the 3 dots on the top right-hand side of the screen.
  12. Click “Save as”
  13. Save it to the “Pictures” Drive.

Week 4

Island Project

Continue working on the Island Project. Most students are still working on Step #2 (Storyboard). If you are working on Step #3 (Creating the Map on blank white paper) read the directions I posted on Tuesday. Make sure you use your best handwriting/coloring so you can get all of your neatness points.

Creating the Commercial

For this part of the project you are going to use Adobe Spark.

Signing Up for Spark

Last year, Adobe Spark was kind of a mess for logging in. The issue we discovered was that you have to be 13 years old. If you are already 13, you should be able to log-in or create your account without problems. If you are not 13 yet, here is a work around for you to create your account.

  1. Go to the bottom of your screen to the search bar where it says, “Type here to search”
  2. Inside of this search bar, type “internet”
  3. Click on Internet Explorer
  4. Inside of Internet Explorer, search for Adobe Spark
  5. Click to go into Adobe Spark’s website
  6. Click “Log-in” at the top of the screen
  7. Click on the “Sign up with email” option
  8. Fill out the information to create an account. You will have to create your own password. For the birthday, you will need to pick a date that makes it to where you are at least 13 years old. If you are only 12, either use a different birthday that is before 11/14 2006 or use 2005 as your birth year.
  9. After you create your account, close Internet Explorer and Open Chrome back up. Adobe Spark won’t let you create a video in Internet Explorer.
  10. Inside of Chrome, go back to Adobe Spark.
  11. Click “Log-in”
  12. Click “Log-in with Adobe ID”
  13. Use the Log-in account that you just created in Internet Explorer to get Logged into Spark.

If you are 13, you will use Chrome and all you need to do to log-in is:

  1. Click Log-in in the upper right hand corner.
  2. Click “Continue with Google”
  3. Type in your normal Google username and password just like you are signing into Google Classroom

After you get logged-in, watch the Tutorial Video that shows you how to use the program. You can access that video at: Google Drive>Shared Drive>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Spark Tutorial

*To record your voice, you will need to use special headphones. I have a box in the back of the room, by the desk, that you can borrow some of these from. These headphones are a little bit different:

-To get them to work, plug them into your USB Port at the front of your computer.

-Make sure the microphone is closer to your chin than it is to your nose. If you have it too close to your nose, it’ll pick up a lot breathing noises.

*When you add narration, wait one second after you press the record button before you begin talking and then hold the record button one extra second after you finish speaking so your picture stays on the screen a little bit longer.

Pictures

You will get most of your pictures from Adobe. Whenever you watch the Tutorial video, it shows you how to get pictures from Adobe. Those pictures are Open Source.

If there is a picture/landform that you are having trouble finding in Adobe, you can use this link which is a website called Creative Commons.

To use Creative Commons, Type the word(s) you want to search for. Then click on Google Images. Then it will take you to pictures from Google Images that are all Open Source. When you find the picture you want to use, right-click on it and select “save image as” then save it to your H Drive.

Week 4

Creating Your Island

When you’re ready for Step #3, that step is drawing your island on a plain, white sheet of paper. You can get paper off of the shelf at the front of the room. Be sure to look at the reminders I posted on yesterday’s directions to help you with this step.

After You Finish

Once you finish step #3 that’s as far as I want you to get today. Tomorrow, I’m going to post directions on how to do step #4 and I’ll give you access to the tutorial video that you will need to watch.
