Week 2

Developed, Developing, and Middle Income

I will start class today by going over a short presentation explaining the difference between Developed and Developing countries. After I finish the presentation you will have a new assignment.

Excel Assignment

The first thing I want you to do for this assignment is watch a tutorial video that I made. Go to the Video (V) Drive. Inside the Video Drive, I want you to click the following: Video>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Semester 2 Excel Basics.

After you watch the video, you need to open Microsoft Excel. It opens the same way as Word and PowerPoint. I want you to create a document that has:

1. 5  Headings- Countries$GDP, Life Expectancy, Literacy Rate, and Classification.    I want you to use size 18 font for the headings and make them bold.

2. In the countries column there are 15 countries I want you to include. They are: United States, China, Japan, India, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, Russia, South Africa, Germany, France, and United Kingdom.

3. In the $GDP column, you need to use this link to find the GDP per capita in each of the countries.  Type the GDP for each country in the column. Make sure you use dollar signs. To do that you will need to change the numbers to currency instead of typing the $ sign. The Tutorial Video shows you how to do this. Change the decimal point to zero.

4. Use this link to find the life expectancy rates for each country. Round each number so there aren’t any decimal points. They should all be whole numbers.

5. Use this link to find the literacy rates for each country. Use the literacy rates for the total population.  Round each number so there aren’t any decimal points. They should all be whole numbers. *The United Kingdom is listed as Great Britain on this website.* If you have trouble finding some of the countries you can use this link as another resource. Just hover the mouse over the country you want to find out about and it will show you the literacy rate.

6. For the Classification column, you need to look at the data to determine whether you believe they are a developed country, developing country or a middle income country. Write which one you believe each country is.

You can use this chart as a guide to help you determine the classification.

DEVELOPED (rich)

MIDDLE-INCOME

DEVELOPING (poor)

LIFE EXPECTANCY

M – 70 and above

F – 80 and above

M – 60’s & 70’s

F – 70’s

M – below 60

F – below 70

INFANT MORTALITY

Below 10

11 – 25

Above 25

LITERACY RATE

97% or above

80% – 96%

Below 80%

PER CAPITA GDP

Above $20,000

$8,000 – $19,999

Below $8,000

7. After each column is finished, make a 2-D Column Chart for GDP. You will do it the exact same way that I did in the video.

8. Make a 2-D Bar Graph for Life Expectancy. You will do it the exact same way that I did in the video.

*Make sure you don’t highlight extra cells whenever you make your graphs. If you do, it won’t work properly. Also, make sure you include your headings in what you highlight so they will show up on your charts. *

After you finish save it.

Week 7

Population PowerPoint

During the first 1/2 of class I’m going to go over a PowerPoint about Population. You don’t need to do anything right now. Just read over what you will be doing after the PowerPoint and then sit quietly. I will start going over the PowerPoint with you in a moment.

After the PowerPoint

Today you will be working in a new program. In this assignment you are going to learn the basics of Microsoft Excel. Most of you have never used this program before. The first thing I want you to do is to watch the tutorial video that I made. Go to the Video (V) Drive. Inside the Video Drive, I want you to click the following: Video>Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Excel Basics.

After you watch the video, you need to open Microsoft Excel. It opens the same way as Word and PowerPoint. I want you to create a document that has:

1. Three Headings- CountriesPopulation$GDP    I want you to use size 18 font for the headings and make them bold. All other cell’s font should be size 12.

2. In the countries column there are 15 countries I want you to include. They are: United States, China, Japan, India, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, Russia, South Africa, Germany, France, and United Kingdom.

3. In the population column, you need to go to Google and type <name of country> population. Type their exact population next to the correct country in the population column.

4. Next you are going to find the GDP per capita. That’s a fancy way of saying how much money the average person makes in a country. In the $GDP column, you need to use this link to find the GDP per capita in each of the countries.  Type the GDP for each country in the column. Make sure you use dollar signs. If you want to you can do what I did in the video and highlight the column and change the numbers to currency instead of typing the $ sign. (Remember you can use ctrl+F to search for specific words on web pages).

-Make sure you change it so there are no decimals

-Also, make sure you change it so that it is “currency”

5. After each column is finished, make a 2-D Column Chart for population. You will do it the exact same way that I did in the video.

6. Make a 2-D Bar Graph for GDP. You will do it the exact same way that I did in the video.

After you finish save it.  hr-last name-last name-Excel

***2 Tips***

1. You can’t have the word million or billion in your spreadsheet. Make sure you only use numbers. If you include words in your cells, it will mess up the charts and graphs.

2. If you add spaces to your cells that don’t need to be there, it will mess up your charts and graphs. Don’t add spaces

3. Make sure that you only highlight the selected cells that have data. If you highlight extra cells that don’t have data, they will mess up the charts and graphs.

Week 8

In our next assignment we are going to look at the economy of Southeast Asia. You will use Excel to complete the assignment.

If you don’t remember how to use Excel, you can watch the tutorial video that I made. Go to the  (V) Drive. Inside the V Drive, I want you to click the following: Osborne>Computer Tutorials>Semester 2 Excel Basics.

I want you to create a document that has:

1. 5  Headings- Countries$GDP, Life Expectancy, Literacy Rate, and Classification.    I want you to use size 20 font for the headings and make them bold.

2. In the countries column there are 15 countries I want you to include. They are: India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan.

3. In the $GDP column, you need to use this link to find the GDP per capita in each of the countries.  Type the GDP for each country in the column. Make sure you use dollar signs. If you want to you can do what I did in the video and highlight the column and change the numbers to currency instead of typing the $ sign. I want whole numbers. I don’t want your decimal point to show cents. Ex. $32,ooo       not   $32,000.oo

4. Use this link to find the life expectancy rates for each country. Round each number so there aren’t any decimal points. They should all be whole numbers.

5. Use this link to find the literacy rates for each country.Use the literacy rates for the total population.  Round each number so there aren’t any decimal points. They should all be whole numbers as a percent. Japan and South Korea aren’t listed on this website. Japan =99%  and South Korea =98%.

**To make it easy on yourselves, highlight the cells and format them as a percentage and 0 decimal places BEFORE you type the numbers in the cells for Literacy Rate. If you type the numbers first, you will have to manually go in and delete extra zeros from your cells**

6. For the Classification column, I want you to look at the data to determine whether you believe they are a developed, developing, or a middle income country. Write which one you believe each country is.

You can use this chart as a guide to help you determine the classification.

DEVELOPED (rich)

MIDDLE-INCOME

DEVELOPING (poor)

LIFE EXPECTANCY

M – 70 and above

F – 80 and above

M – 60’s & 70’s

F – 70’s

80% – 96%

7. After each column is finished, make a 2-D Column Chart for GDP. You will do it the exact same way that I did in the video.

8. Make a 2-D Bar Graph for Life Expectancy. You will do it the exact same way that I did in the video.
